BACKGROUND

Gladiolus Thrip hails from a world much like ours, except magic is real! What a concept. Specifically, he's from 2009 London, and you're not going to forget the "London" part any time he opens his mouth. Here, supernatural beings are known as "half-lives" (no, not demons; yes, the show's called "Demons"), and are classified by rank according to their power level, from the wimpy Type 1s and Type 2s to the fearsome Type 15s of legend. Thrip is a Type 12 and the closest thing the show has to a recurring antagonist (he's in two episodes).

The plot of Demons centers on a teenage boy named Luke Rutherford, the recently discovered great-grandson of famed vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. As such, he's now a hot commodity among the half-life community, with all manner of ghoulies, ghosties, and general beasties vying to be the one to kill the last Van Helsing. Luke now has to not only learn how to protect himself pretty damn quick, but also take up the mantle of the smiter himself. Stakes through the heart, that kind of thing.

But if you want to know Luke's story, watch the show. Here's the Cliffs Notes on Thrip's role in the plot: he orchestrates a kidnapping in the first episode to get to Luke, succeeds in that he does get to Luke but then Luke shoots him, sort of dies, comes back for the last episode with a longer-term plot to win Luke over to his side by faking a message from his dead dad, and it kind of looks like it's going to work but then Luke's vampire friend bites him and he dies for real.

That's about all we get on Thrip in the show. Anything that I play beyond what's shown on screen, including his backstory or deeper motivations, is headcanon, though I try to keep it plausible when I can and funny when I can't. Read the other sections of this infobox to find out more of the basics, but to sum the guy up here: he may look foppish and theatrical (and he is!), but he's also very much extremely dangerous. But not quite as dangerous as he thinks.

Don't ask what happened to his nose.
